The Mariners continued to shake things up Monday, sending second baseman Dustin Ackley and pitcher Lucas Luetge down to Triple-A Tacoma and calling up infielder Nick Franklin and pitcher Hector Noesi in their places.
Ackley, the 2009 No. 2 overall MLB Draft pick, has scuffled throughout the 2013 season, the 25-year-old’s third with the Mariners. After an 0-for-5 performance in Seattle’s extra-inning win over the Texas Rangers Sunday, Ackley dropped to a .205 batting average, .266 on-base percentage and .250 slugging percentage. He is hitless in his last 19 at-bats, and has just five extra-base hits this season.
Franklin, 22, is making his first trip to the big club. The 27th overall pick in the 2009 MLB Draft, Franklin has hit .324 with a .440 on-base percentage and .472 slugging percentage in 39 games for Tacoma this season. He also has four home runs, 20 RBI, 28 runs scored and seven stolen bases (in seven attempts).
Noesi has already made five appearances for the Mariners this season, including a spot start in a 3-2 win over the New York Yankees on May 16. The right-hander has a 2.63 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 13.2 innings with the Mariners, and a 10.80 ERA and 2.00 WHIP in five innings (one appearance) with Tacoma.
Left-handed reliever Luetge has a 7.15 ERA and 1.85 WHIP in 11 games with Seattle.
Monday’s moves follow a pair of roster shake-ups late last week, when the Mariners sent down catcher Jesus Montero and designated infielder Robert Andino for assignment. Catcher Jesus Sucre and infielder Carlos Triunfel were called up in their place.
