NEWARK, N.J. — Marshawn Lynch summed up his aversion to spotlight in once sentence.
“I’m just about that action, boss,” he told the NFL Network when asked by Deion Sanders about his proclivity for media silence.
Translation: he’d much rather play football than talk about it. But as much as Seattle’s star running back tried to avoid being the center of attention at media day Tuesday, he only could for so long before reporters caught up to him.
He gave a brief interview with a group of reporters that included 710 ESPN Seattle’s Liz Mathews, and he was only slightly less terse that normal. According to the Associated Press, Lynch left the floor of the Prudential Center 6 minutes into media day and then returned to conduct a handful of individual interviews, including one with Sanders that was brief and equal parts awkward and hilarious.
At one point, Lynch dropped an S-bomb while exchanging complements with Sanders on each others outfits. Lynch wore large sunglasses with his team-issued jacket zipped all the way up and the hood pulled over his head.
By speaking with the media Tuesday, Lynch continued to fulfill his end of a deal he struck earlier this season with the NFL. He had been fined $50,000 for not making himself available to reporters, but that was put on hold with the agreement that it would either disappear or double depending on whether or not he fulfilled his media obligations for the remainder of the season.
He gave Sanders a glimpse of why he doesn’t like speaking to the media.
“I ain’t never seen no talking win me nothing,” Lynch said. “Been like that since I was little. Raised like that. Want something? You go get it. Ain’t no need to talk about it.”
