Seahawks’ Paul Richardson still feeling fast with added weight

LISTEN:

NFL teams mostly dread the thought of players gaining a significant amount of weight over the offseason. For the Seahawks and rookie wide receiver Paul Richardson, though, that was the plan.

Richardson weighed about 160 pounds during his final season at Colorado, and just about every projection of his NFL career included the opinion that Seattle’s second-round pick had to add a bit of bulk. As he told 710 ESPN Seattle’s “Bob and Groz” on Tuesday, he has.

“In college I was anywhere from 159-162 – they had me listed heavier than I was,” he said. “But I’ve gained 20 pounds and I’m still playing fast and I think that I’m getting stronger.”

That was another potential concern, whether the added weight would take away from Richardson’s biggest strength, his speed. While Richardson says he’s noticed a difference, it’s been in a good way.

“I feel more explosive actually. I feel more explosive with the weight,” he said. “I think that my lower body is getting stronger. I’m not taking my upper body off, but I think it’s better to have a stronger foundation and work my way up, and that’s what I’ve been doing.”
